These are two very different examples of what I think was a very good use of design in posters. The first one was designed for the Obama campaign and I think it is truly effective in the sense that it almost shows different colors of people as well and how they can evolve to become ONE as people and that is really a large aspect of Obama becoming the first mixed or black president. He is trying to help other people change for the best and I think that through this simple design it says it all.
In this poster, i just think that it is a good campaign to put on a poster in general. But, besides that the way the design was made, showing people almost "revolting" for reading and screaming the words READ in English and Spanish was an effective way to show the importance of reading. Readvolution was my favorite part because it was a good twist on the posters purpose!Monday, November 23, 2009

effective magazine covers!
This is an old magazine cover but I thought since we are talking about design this was a good example! I think that it is effective because the Subject of the magazine is blatantly obvious. And also it doesn't clutter the page with what there is to see inside like many of the fashion magazines, but it shows the creativity of the cover with colors. Yet, at the bottom it includes subjects and information that can be found within the magazine! Retro but good.
Modern Business card

This is the link to what I think is an effective yet modernized business card. It is bold and colorful and has a funky lay out which helps the consumer really remember it! With its bold letters and bright colors it wont get lost in the mix. Also I think it was great how they had the front of the card be horizontal but on the back the information read vertically. It was just different and something that not many people would do for their business cards. Also since it is for a stylist i thought it really showed her personality and style as well which would make me comfortable with going to her for creativity.
Its back is simple and easy enough to read and follows the hierarchy of order for information very well.

I actually found two logos i thought were really clever and good usage of different shapes to construct a logo that really matches the meaning and work of the company. I think that the better yet logo is my favorite because it portrays this image to me that they are making houses but using some sort of better way to build which is more in tune with the "go green" kind of movement that is really taking over the nation right now. I think also that the symbol of the house is some what in the same sense a tree which can convey maybe from another perspective just that they use top of the line wood perhaps. The recycling logo i just thought were all a clever use of color and imagery. For instance even though the one that is red, red being not a color normally associated with the earth, it works because it almost forms a heart. Which gives me the idea of loving the earth!

Bad design
This was my example that I worked with for the good and bad design project. I choose this design because it seemed like a simple low budget ad that could really use help. I chose it because it was not appealing to me as a viewer for many reasons. First of all, I am a person who loves smoothies and would definitely utilize the Say "make it skinny" for a dollar off of my smoothie if it was more clear and obvious for me to see. Also, this is full of interesting facts but the lay out wasn't making it known. I wouldn't take the time to see that they are low calories which if better shown would catch many women's eyes!
I think that the lay out of the design was poorly done just because all of the words are all the same color and size and in the same area or paragraph. It isn't easy for the consumer to see the specials or even what they offer if it wasn't for the pictures of the smoothies. More colors and structure will fix this.

Typography 2
Here is another example of a creative typography advertisement. Though it is plane the color contrasts and the different use of size and width of the lettering really shows an effective message that Smoking does reduce weight. By showing the word "smoking" in a bolder thicker type and then slowly reducing the bold style of the words until the word "weight" is in skinny type of typing, it conveys the message of what can slowly change if someone was to quit smoking. Its simple with all the same font, but very effective through the use of very contradictory colors as well as the thickness of the lettering.

Typography in design<3
I found this advertisement for a Vodafone advertisement. This is the type of phone service i had when I was overseas so I actually saw a number of vodafone ads but none as eye catching as this. I picked it because we are really focusing on typography in advertising and i thought that this was a perfect example. Though I'm not sure what text style it is, the entire picture is made up of the same font just in different colors and directions. In my eyes, this ad is saying that you can use this phone service to do whatever you what to do and say what ever you want to say. While focusing on the company in Sydney. By using text as the visual make up of the picture its telling the viewer that they can talk more about all the things they did in Sydney, Australia.

Color in Design
Commercial products in this day and age need to find specific ways to identify and separate themselves from the other competitors. Often times one of the most effective ways to bring attention to your brand or company in advertisements is through the use of color. In this picture is an example of what I think is a really good use of color. Even though this ipod apple advertisement is only made up of basically three colors (for example yellow, black, and white) they are all bright and eye catching. The colors are more of a flat color of pink green and yellow so its not too bright but bright enough to catch someones attention. The use of the black person on the brighter background really helps contrast the two light and dark pallets but yet still brings focus to the actual point of the advertisement by using white to bring the last attention of your eye to the ipod/ product! I think that the colors are very effective as well because these bright colors to me, give me a sense of happiness which is what i would then associate with the Apple product. Also, the use of the black on the dancing people makes the viewer focus on that person and really absorb that this product can be a fun and useful product. Though they are simple colors they are all balanced equally on the advertisement as to allow your eye to really absorb everything the ad is trying to convey.

What is graphic design?!
Many people wonder what exactly is graphic design? What purpose does it serve in our everyday lives?
In my opinion, graphic design can be represented by a number of artistic and professional qualities, which focus on visual communication and presentation of an idea, product, or anything, to the public eye. Graphic design is a way of taking a product, for instance, and transforming that product into a visual aid for people to see. Through graphic design people can begin to recognize the product and associate specific qualities of graphic design, such as pictures, logos, symbols, etc., with the product or whatever is being used. Graphic design is a way to recognize and relate a symbol or idea to the people using visual aid which often times are stronger than words themselves. Also, in my opinion graphic design is much more than using just any old picture or symbol to help associate with a product, but it is also using computer abilities to change and enhance certain things graphics that couldn't be done by hand, and makes it more appealing for the eye to see. Graphic design is all around us in the world today no matter where one lives. Graphic design is the symbols for gas stations, such as citgo, or specific restaurants, such as jimmy johns, to the commercials you see on TV. Its found in posters, commercials, and dominates the Internet today. Either way, Graphic Design is a specific art and professional way of page lay outs and designs for visual communication which is taking over the world one design at a time.
